Officially hurricane Season started this week and it is a good time to prepare ourselves in time. Usually the top of the season is between mid August till end of September but with current climate changes we never know what can happen. So here is a check list that might come useful :

1. Keep in touch with the news and follow weather forecasts and warnings. A good hurricane watch site is https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php

2. Better be safe than sorry: everyone needs to be prepared for the unexpected.

  • Get or know where to get materials to protect your home in case a warning gets serious. Having shutters is the best, check if they are working well.
  • Clean your gutters so rain can flow without obstructions. Watch your pool level, you might want to lower the level substantially so heavy rainfall doesn't flood your home or garden.
  • Make sure you have enough food and drinking water so you can last a while whithout having to go out.
  • Prepare your flashlights with new batteries in case the power goes out and make sure you have a first aid kit ready.
  • Have a list of emergency numbers at hand. Also prepare an inventory of your house, just in case you have to hand a list to your insurance company, the quickest way is taking pictures. Also store all valuable documents in watertight safe.

3. Set up a network with your friends and family so you know how to find each other in case you have to evacuate your home. Make sure your pets have an ID tag so they can be returned if they get lost. If you are away from home, find somebody who will check on it.

4. Prepare your car, make sure it is full of fuel and in good working condition in case you have to use it. Cover it up to have a minimum protection against debris.

5. If you have a boat, make sure it is moored in a more protected area such as higher up the river instead of the marina. Stay in touch with marine authorities to get an update on any changing conditions. Have your emergency radios charged and battery packs ready.

6. Trim your bushes and trees, and make sure your palm trees have no coconuts that could fly around.

7. Store your outdoor furniture.

Proper preparation will go a long way in avoiding major trouble !

While the resort life definitely has its draws, the Dominican Republic offers so much more than just gorgeous golf courses and luxurious villas and hotels. For adventurous types who want to explore a different side of the island, there are plenty of places where you can get off the beaten path and immerse yourself in nature, culture and spectacular scenery.

Bayahibe

Located just 10 miles from Casa de Campo, Bayahibe is a charming fishing village with a very laid-back vibe. Here colorful houses face the sparkling Caribbean Sea, boats bob in the bay, and beachfront restaurants serve up fresh seafood caught that day. You can spend your time here relaxing on one of the white sand beaches, scuba diving in the clear water around the coast, or setting off on a boat trip to nearby Saona Island. Be sure to stay long enough catch the sunset and have dinner next to the water, as the lights on the bay make for a very romantic scene.

Los Haitises National Park

If ecotourism peaks your interest, then Los Haitises National Park should be on the top of your list of places to visit in the DR. This protected area spans 826 square kilometres and it features conical karst formations, virgin forests, and the largest cave in the Caribbean. Take a guided tour to see untouched mangroves, Taino cave paintings, and fascinating wildlife like the Hispaniolan woodpecker, colourful crabs and dolphins. The park is about a three-hour drive from Punta Cana, which is a bit of a trek from the resorts in the southeast of the DR, but the journey is well worth it.

Pico Duarte

Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the Caribbean with a peak of 3,098 metres or 10,164 feet, which makes it a popular spot with intrepid hikers. There are many trails that wind their way up the mountain and plenty of guides who can accompany you to the top along with donkeys to carry food, water and camping equipment. The total hike takes about two to four days, and your guide will set you up in an overnight hut on the mountain and prepare all your meals.

Santo Domingo

Being the capital city of the Dominican Republic, you would think that Santo Domingo would be a popular tourist hotspot, but actually many visitors skip the city altogether and head straight for the resorts and beaches on the northern and southeastern coasts. However, Santo Domingo offers plenty to see along its cobblestone streets  including historic cathedrals, palaces and the oldest fortress in the Americas. You can also indulge in delicious gourmet fare at chic restaurants and cafes, and revel in the nightlife at trendy jazz clubs, discos and casinos.

Parque Nacional Del Este

Parque Nacional Del Este lies on the far southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic just a short drive from Casa de Campo, and it is a prime destination for nature lovers. This protected park is home to over 112 species of birds, a marine park with coral reefs, sea turtles and tropical fish, and lush forests with hidden caves, some of which have ancient pictographs. Saona Island is part of the park, and a great spot for those looking for some sun, sea and sand.

It’s that time of year again! Time to hide away those winter clothes and bring out the beach apparel.

Grab a snorkel and a pair of fins and explore the underwater world just off of private Minitas Beach, hire a kayak and make your way up the Chavón River to see Altos de Chavón perched high above and lush greenery on all sides, or take a catamaran over to Catalina Island where sun, sea and sand awaits. Horseback Riding & Polo

There are also sports camps available like polo clinics, the Junior Golf Academy, and the FCBEscola soccer camp designed by FC Barcelona.

Family Excursions

Sure, you could spend your entire time at Casa de Campo hanging out by the pool or on the beach, but there are so many amazing things to see and do just a short drive from the resort. Take a trip to the magnificent Las Maravillas cave system where you can see ancient cave paintings by the Taíno people. Fly through the air over the treetops on a zipline adventure, careen through the countryside in a buggy, or take a glass-bottom boat tour to see colorful reefs, tropical fish and sharks directly under your feet. Or just learn a bit more of the history of the island in a fun way and visit the Archeological Museum at Altos de Chavon.

Last year Casa de Campo hosted the Polo Challenge RD, the first ever high-handicap polo series ever played in the Dominican Republic. The event was registered in the World Polo Tour, and it was a huge success with Lechuza Caracas coming out on top as the champions at the Caribbean Open Finals. Casa de Campo was chosen (along with Los Establos in Cap Cana) to host the matches not only because the polo grounds here are some of the best in the Caribbean, but because the resort is fast becoming known around the world as a premier polo destination.

Directed by Argentinian-born professional polo player Fernando Arata, the Polo Club at Casa de Campo boasts not one, but three 300-yard playing fields where many national and international tournaments take place, as well as a practice field where players can polish their game. Moreover, Casa de Campo has the largest string of polo ponies owned by one brand, and guests are welcome to hire ponies for stick and ball matches.

For those who have never played polo before, or for those who know how to play but want to brush up on their skills, the Polo Club at Casa de Campo offers group and private polo lessons for all levels year round. You can start off with an assistant instructor who will provide you with gear, teach you the rules and get you out on the field, and then once you have the basics down, you can move on to lessons with a polo professional to learn new tricks and tips that will help you take your game to the next level.

Polo is also a great way for children to learn teamwork and hand-eye coordination and get some exercise out in the fresh air. During the summers, Casa de Campo offers polo clinics for kids every Sunday from 9am to 11am with discounts for groups with three or more children. Parents can also sign up their little ones for group or one-on-one polo lessons at the equestrian center any time of year, as well as Western and English style riding classes and jumping and rodeo trick sessions.

Finally, for those who prefer to take in their polo chukkas from the sidelines rather than in the saddle, regular polo matches take place between the months of November to April. Casa de Campo will also host the second season of the Polo Challenge where you can watch top players like Juan Martin Nero, Adolfo Cambiaso and David Sterling make history on the fields and put the Dominican Republic on the map as one of the world’s most sought-after polo destinations.
